Taking Positive Action

Taking Positive Action

This week’s podcast is titled “Taking the Proper Action Steps,” and it’s part of a month-long journey through the thought model developed by my coach, Brooke Castillo.

Today, I want to hone in on taking positive action to get the results you desire in your work.

Positive action can ONLY come from a positive thought.

If you are thinking “I hate my job,” the action you take WON’T be to double down on your work.

If you are thinking “I’ll never get another job,” the action you take WON’T be to execute an effective job search.

Let’s work backwards from the result you want to have, and determine the actions, feelings, and thoughts that can get you to that result.

RESULT I WANT: A raise.

ACTION I WILL TAKE: Double down on my work performance; document my accomplishments; meet with my boss to ask for the raise.

FEELING THAT WILL DRIVE THAT ACTION: Confidence; Dedication.

THOUGHT THAT WILL DRIVE THE FEELINGS OF CONFIDENCE AND DEDICATION: “I am a valuable employee for this company.”

Now, I hear what you are saying…what if I think that thought, feel that feeling, take those actions…and my boss still doesn’t give me a raise?

You are right in recognizing that the result you want is not entirely in your hands. After all, your boss has to approve the raise.

BUT…what are the chances you’ll get that raise if you don’t take the actions mentioned above?

AND…how much better of an employee, how much more professional, how much more developed will you be if you take those actions?

Yep. All upside for you as you evolve through this process. No upside to slacking off and not asking for that raise.

So work backward. Look at a result you are getting in your life that you’re not happy with, and determine the actions, feelings, and thought that got you there.

Then think of a result you DO want. What action, feeling, and thought will get you there?

Then DO IT.
