Number One Tip for Managing Your Career

Number One Tip for Managing Your Career

In this week’s podcast, I offer my five top tips for managing your career.

In this week’s blog, I’m offering Tip #3:

Get Crystal Clear On Your Brand…and Shamelessly Self-Promote

What do you think of when you think of Nike? McDonald’s? Nordstrom?

Love them or hate them, you are familiar with what they stand for. What they offer. How they are different from their competition.

Can you clearly articulate the same things about yourself?

Here’s the alternative: You’re generic.

Which means: you are the low-cost alternative. Nondescript. Unmemorable.

I want you to be crystal clear on your brand attributes on a granular level. Know what makes you different from your competition.

Here are three possible ways to determine your brand:

  1. Self-assess
  2. Ask others
  3. Work with a career management/branding professional (like me)

If you choose to self-assess, here are three key questions to ask yourself:

  1. What do I do differently and better than others in my field?
  2. What do I dislike about how others in my profession go about their work, and what is my solution to that?
  3. What feedback do I consistently receive from others about my strengths?

If you choose to ask others, here are three key questions to ask:

  1. What do I do better than anyone else you know?

  2. If you had to compare me to a type of car, which one would it be and why?

  3. What three adjectives best describe me?

By working with a professional, you will have the benefit of a neutral expert asking you probing questions…digging deeper to find out what is truly differentiating about you. We use tools like the 360Reach branding instrument to gain insight from a wide variety of people in your life who know you in different capacities.
