Annual List of Five Unusual Things to be Thankful For

It’s Thanksgiving in the U.S. Time to take stock of the things we’re thankful for.

Last year, I wrote a blog entitled “Five Unusual Things to be Thankful For,” which has been one of my most-read blogs ever.

I thought I’d continue that tradition with this year’s list.

If you’d like to hear more about my thoughts on these five, be sure to listen to The Exclusive Career Coach podcast #8.

Here’s the deal: you can expect half of your life to be negative emotion. (This according to my life coach, Brooke Castillo). It’s the negative in your life that gives meaning to the positive.

-You wouldn’t know what health was if you’d never been sick.

-You wouldn’t appreciate beauty if you’d never experience ugliness.

-You wouldn’t appreciate wealth without poverty.

This year’s list is coming directly from my life, and the lessons I’ve learned are applicable to each of you in some way.

Here are the Five Unusual Things I’m Thankful For this year:

  1. Facing a difficult year with a lot of uphill battles.
  2. Being sick more than usual.
  3. Taking a bad fall.
  4. Getting into a seemingly good situation…that wasn’t.
  5. Being in an environment that drains your energy.

I invite you to listen to episode #8 to hear the lessons I learned from each of these Five Unusual Things.

Here’s what I want you to think about: what in your life that you’ve thought of as “terrible” could actually be viewed as a blessing? What in your life has:

-Caused you to look at yourself, the people in your life, or your work in a different light?

-Required a shakeup of the way you normally go about your daily life?

-Caused you physical pain or discomfort?

For each of these questions, how can you create goodness out of the situation?
