Tools for Networking During Your Job Search

Tools for Networking During Your Job Search

As we wrap up this thread, here are some additional networking insights:

## In-person networking.

Get out and meet people! Some networking can effectively be done via phone or even e-mail, but most of the time an in-person meeting is far better. I recommend that you set some goals for yourself – commit to XX lunches, coffee meetings, or drinks after work with people in your network each week. Then make it happen, no excuses allowed. If you’re not sure what to do during these meetings, see my previous blog entitled “Networking…A MUST in Your Job Search.”

## Groups.

Think of what groups might be a good fit for your job search goals. Chamber of Commerce functions, civic organization meetings, and community activities are often great networking platforms because of the cross-section of professionals you’ll find there. If your search is regional or national (or even international), professional association meetings or conventions might be your best bet.

## LinkedIn.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, LinkedIn can be a great vehicle by which you can get your expertise out there. Join a few on-brand groups and then CONTRIBUTE. Ask questions, comment on others’ postings. The goal here is to position yourself as an expert in your field.

Notice that I said “on brand.” The groups you join, the postings you respond to, and the questions you ask should directly relate to your professional field and career goals. I happen to love dogs, but you won’t find me joining a dog lovers’ group on LinkedIn; it isn’t part of my brand of providing exceptional job search services to high-achieving executives.

Don’t be shy.

Share that you’re looking and what you’re looking for every chance you get. If you don’t have a 30-second elevator speech prepared yet, get cracking on it. You want to be able to succinctly tell someone what you’re looking for and what you have to offer.
