The Value of Job Search Coaching

The Value of Job Search Coaching

Virtually every day, we seek the services of an expert. If you’re sick, you go to the doctor who specializes in your illness. If you’re trying to get in better shape, you might seek assistance from a personal trainer. If you have a legal issue, you go to a lawyer.

Looking for a Job is a Job

Today’s job searches are more complex, multi-faceted, and less intuitive than ever. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Do I know how to conduct a targeted, proactive job search that doesn’t rely solely on job boards?
  • Do I know the on-line resources available to research employers, and what I should be looking for?
  • Do I know how to reach decision-makers in my target companies? Have I even identified my target companies?
  • Do I know how to project-manage my job search?

If you were able to answer “yes” to all of these questions, then great! If not, perhaps you need an expert.

Enter a Job Search Coach

Here’s what a job search coach is: Your partner, expert, and guide in the job search process. The job search coach does not conduct your job search for you, but rather guides you through each phase of the job search in a systematic, effective way. You are expected to accomplish the tasks you agree to take on, and you’re more likely to do them because you know your coach will hold you accountable.

Let’s go back to the first paragraph for an analogy. If you want to get in shape and lose 20 pounds, is your personal trainer going to exercise for you? Is she going to put the right foods in your mouth (and keep the wrong ones out)? Of course not. Your personal trainer will show you how to exercise, perhaps provide you with an eating plan, and hold YOU accountable.

Working with a Job Search Coach

At the risk of being accused of shameless self-promotion, I am a Certified Job Search Strategist (i.e. a job search coach). Some clients reach out to me knowing they want a job search coach from the “get-go.” Others will come to me after they’ve been trying for a while, achieving only limited results and no job offers. Still others have identified a specific component of the job search that’s hanging them up—such as the interview—and they come to me for targeted assistance.

If I’ve gotten you thinking that job search coaching could be for you, let’s set up a complimentary coaching session via phone. My goal for your consultation is to give you valuable information and insight, whether or not you sign up for a coaching package. I don’t tease you, and then ask you to sign up so you can get the full story.
